When setting up any kind of home boxing gym there are about five basic things you need to get going. The first is a classic staple, the boxing heavy bag. Whenever you go to any reputable boxing gym you will see plenty of punching bags, “why?” because they are necessary! The heavy bag is essential because it simulates what it will feel like when hitting an opponent, it also allows you to practice on your technique, speed and power. Keep in mind that when picking out a heavy bag the rule of thumb is half your body weight and if you don’t want it to fall apart in the future invest in a heavy bag made of good quality leather.

Once you have the heavy bag you will need to hang it, I recommend using a boxing stand or heavy bag stand. These are optimal for home gyms because you don’t have to worry about the bag falling from the ceiling causing structural or cosmetic damage. The boxing stand allows for easy movement around the bag and can allow you to train any time without waking up your family or neighbors.

The next most important thing to have is your hand wraps. You don’t want to start hitting your punching bag without them because you may just break your hand. See there are small, fragile bones in your hand and the wrap acts as a brace to protect them. Do not ignore this! I have found many fighters break their hands because they don’t use wraps, learn the lesson from them. Also keep in mind that if you play guitar or need your hands for something you like to do it’s not worth the risk.

Looking forward, boxing gloves are the next piece of the puzzle. The type of gloves I recommend are ones specifically for hitting heavy bags. For now in your home gym all you are going to be doing is hitting on the heavy bag, so these gloves will be perfect. Look for gloves that have heavy padding and weigh between 8-10 ounces.

Now once you have your heavy bag, boxing stand, wraps and gloves, the last thing you will need is a jump rope. Jumping rope is a great way to warm up, build cardiovascular strength, increase agility, balance, coordination, timing and endurance and is a key part to your overall training and development.

Now there are more things you can add to your home boxing gym, but these five will get you started.
