Kickboxing – A Whole Body Workout That Packs a Punch!

What is Cardio Kickboxing? Cardio Kickboxing as it is commonly called in today’s fitness world is a blend of western boxing, martial arts, and aerobics. Some instructors present their programs similar to an aerobics class as the lead their students through the movements to the beat of high energy music some will incorporate body weight exercises, while others will have their clients striking heavy bags or focus mitts. All are provide a great work out what is important is that you find the style of class that is write for you.

Why Kickboxing? Kickboxing is not only fun as heck and energizing, but it truly provides many physical as well as mental benefits.

What are some of the benefits? Kickboxing has been proven to not only relieve stress but can completely get rid of it.

This kind of workout releases endorphins in the brain which creates a positive mood as well as improves self confidence.

Because this is a total body workout that engages your hand eye coordination you will find that it improves your reflexes and coordination. You can notice these results in as little as a few weeks.

Punching with power, which I only recommend against a bag or mitts, will develop your shoulders, traps, triceps, forearms, chest and abs. Similarly properly performed kicks develop your legs, gluts, and abs. Knee strikes focus almost entirely on your abs.

The high pace of a cardio kickboxing class will work out your heart and lungs making them strong and fit, event to the point of controlling blood pressure. In a short time you will find that your energy level has dramatically increased, making your day to day activities and duties considerably easier.

Due to the nature of the workouts your flexibility will improve as well as your posture. The muscles required to throw strong punches, kicks and knees all tie in to your core, which in turn strengthens your back improving your posture.

Can I learn to defend myself in a cardio kickboxing class? You will not learn how to defend yourself in a cardio kickboxing class. however if you are already training in a self defense class engaging in a cardio kickboxing class a few times a week will greatly sharpen your self defense skills.

How to find an instructor. When searching out an instructor, its important to find someone that has attained a high level ranking in martial arts, as well as has certification in some form of fitness training. As with anything, you get what you pay for. Your health and fitness is not an area to search for a bargain. You wouldn’t look for the cheapest doctor in town, you shouldn’t search out the cheapest fitness provider either.

Always try out a class before you enroll if possible to make sure it is write for you. Most instructors will give you a free class to make sure that its a good fit for all who are involved.

Combat Sports – Cambodian Pradal Serey Freestyle Kickboxing

Sometimes you will hear Pradal Serey being called Bradahl Serei. This style of Kickboxing comes out of Cambodia. This Combat Sport style was originally used in Battle, but now Cambodia considers it one of their National Sports. Modern Rules have caused some of the moves they used to have changed a little bit. The main focus of this sport is to win a competition as it is a rule based sport. Similar to Muay Thai Boxing, this sport focuses in 4 major strikes which originate from the knees, elbows, fists and feet.

The clinch is also used as a way or tiring and fatiguing their opponent. Pradal Serey uses more stealth and and shifty fighting stances which differentiates them from most other forms of Southeast Asian Style Kickboxing forms. Elbows are also used more often than in a lot of other styles. The elbow has been responsible for more wins than any other strike used. Fighting has been going on within the Southeast Asia Region since ancient times. Eventually Combat Sports developed as a result of this.

The Khmers in the Angkor Era developed and used armed and unarmed martial arts styles. In fact there was a style that closely resembled Pradal Serey around the 10th Century. People think this could be the reason that the Khmers had such great success in Southeast Asia during that time period. Angkor also used an ancient form of this Combat Sport with other weapons as well as War Elephants to go to war against Champa from Cambodia and Siam from Thailand. Around the 10th century, they controlled most of Cambodia, as well as Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.

Because of this, Cambodia has had a huge impact on Lao as well as Thai Culture. The Khmer have a belief that Kickboxing in Southeast Asia started with the Mon Khmer. Many Europeans around the Colonial Period were not in favor of Pradal Serey because they considered it too brutal.

The French adopted the idea of this sport but made some enhancements to it, which included timed rounds and the use of boxing gloves to prevent excessive injury. In the old days matches used to take place in dirt pits with rope wrapped hands and very few rules. Seashells were even wrapped around the knuckles of some boxers to make the fights more brutal.

Kickboxing and the Pursuit of Fitness, Exercise, and Weight Loss

The benefits of kickboxing are endless. It’s a total body workout, so after a short time you’ll start seeing results. Your body will take on more tone and muscle definition. It will help strengthen your core so your posture is better. After a class you’ll feel energized and also sleep better at night after a good workout. If your pursuing fitness, exercise, and weight loss then try kickboxing.

Wear loose and comfortable clothing and sneakers that allow side to side movements like cross trainers. Don’t overdo yourself and start off slowly. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.

You can take classes at your local gym or YMCA, and you might even have a local kickboxing center that focuses on genuine martial arts style kickboxing, or has a cardio kickboxing class. You can also find many videos on dvd to try it at home.

Another plus is that you might be getting bored of your usual exercise classes and want to try something new. There are plenty of different classes out there, so you can always supplement your usual exercise classes with kickboxing once a week. Since it’s such a good full body workout, combined with walking, jogging, and/or yoga will help you boost your metabolism and lose weight in no time.

Losing weight means sticking to a good diet and getting plenty of exercise. The best forms of exercise are cardio. Walking, jogging, and high impact aerobics all get your heart rate up. Not only is this good for cardiovascular health but it burns calories and raises metabolism. When your metabolism is working efficiently and at top form, you’ll melt off the pounds.

With kickboxing, the exercise is so intense and geared towards aerobics that you could burn over three hundred calories in one class or more. Make sure to maintain proper form to prevent injury. Avoid overextending and keep punches at shoulder height. Protect your face, and make sure to go at your own pace. Work on your form, and once you have that down, work your way up to the fast pace demanded.
