Self Defense Benefits of Boxing

September 3rd, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Today we discuss the Self-Defense benefits from enrolling in a boxing class. If you are learning self-defense and are considering taking a boxing course to supplement what you’ve been learning, this article will be of particular interest to you.

First and foremost, find a good teacher! Ask people you know whom they would recommend. Watch a class by each prospective teacher. Do they take the time to work with students having issues, or are you left on your own to repeat bad technique over and over? Do they show equal attention to all the students, or have their favorites they spend more time with? Are there warm-ups before class? Do they make sure you are solid on the basics before showing you more advanced material?

A good boxing coach will show you proper ways to warm up, including stretching. Avoiding injury during your workouts is key. A common complaint is “but I don’t have time to warm up while being attacked!” That’s correct! But, you are not in a self defense situation now, you are performing demanding physical activities in class. If you are working out, practicing self-defense techniques, or taking a boxing class, then you owe it to yourself to prepare your body for what is coming.

Studying boxing will teach you the importance of your stance and how to move. These are the foundations not only in a self defense situation, but in any fighting style or sport. You can quickly gauge someone’s experience as a fighter by observing how they stand and move.

Boxing classes teach how the stance maintains balance. You don’t want to be out of balance after a punch or self defense move. Everything in boxing, karate, self defense, or any fighting style happens in split seconds. Being out of balance for even a brief period makes you very vulnerable to your opponent (not to mention embarrassed if you fall during class).

A course in boxing will reinforce what self-defense training preaches: keeping your hands in proper position. Hands must be up at all times (but not in front of your face. Your vision is obscured and you can be whacked in the head by your own hands if someone punches them). You must be ready to block a takedown, grab, punch, or kick.

Have you ever walked by the type of school that has the big glass windows in front? Watch the class for a few moments. If the teacher yells a command, and the students throw a punch, but keep their arms held out at full extension after the strike, waiting for the next command from the teacher, AVOID that school. The way you train determines the way you react in a self defense situation. Things happen very quickly, and you don’t have time to analyze what you will do next. If you don’t train to bring your hands back to a defensive position immediately, you will leave them out there, and you WILL get hit. Hard. If you need proof, turn on the television and watch a boxing or UFC MMA fight. The fighters quickly bring their hands back to position after every punch to prevent themselves from being hit by a counterstrike from their opponent.

Physical fitness is another major benefit of boxing classes. Your cardiovascular health will increase by leaps and bounds. Your entire body is used during boxing. Legs are moving constantly, abs are twisting as you throw punches, back, shoulders, biceps, and arms are worked non stop. Hitting the bags over 1000 times during an hour long class is not unusual. Using the speedbag for 10 minutes straight will make your traps burn. When class is over, you are dripping in sweat, and it’s clear you’ve had one of the best all around workouts possible.

Finally, sparring will definitely sharpen your self defense moves. Lets face it: anyone can throw punches at a heavy-bag. The bag doesn’t move, and it doesn’t hit you back! Put the gloves and headgear on, step into the ring, and your whole perception changes. It doesn’t matter if you never want to be in a boxing match. I recommend you spar at least a few times with your training buddy or coach. You will understand clearly what it is like to have someone trying to hit you. You will see just how fast things happen, which is why I stress over and over to my self defense students to train the techniques into muscle memory. They must happen automatically, without thinking. Trust me, sparring will quickly make a believer out of you.

How do you transition what you learn from boxing into a self-defense situation? After all, when you are boxing you have big pillows on your hand to protect your face and body with. On the street, you don’t. Well, stay tuned for a future article!

High Top Boxing Shoes – A Few Benefits

August 28th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

As all kick boxers will know, high top boxing shoes are a MUST when it comes to preparing for a kick boxing workout or event. Kick boxing is a sport that needs lots of support in the ankles and legs. They are made from a soft leather material that is light weight and comfortable. It is important that these shoes fit so perfectly that it feels as if there are not any shoes on at all. This makes it so much easier to execute the kicks necessary for a good work out or to win a kick boxing event.

Something else that helps with providing the added support that high top boxing shoes offer to the wearer is the laces that tie up the shin. This makes the high tops more supportive and enables the boxer to confidently execute those strong high kicks that win events. There is never a worry or concern that your kick will not hit its intended mark.

Another aspect of the high top shoes is that they tend to have a better traction system. These usually have rubber soles or non-slip patterns that will allow the boxer to grip the floor of the ring before moving into the winning kick. This effective combination allows for just the right amount of support and traction that does the most for the sport of kick boxing.

This is not to say that you cannot win a kick boxing event with another type of boxing shoes, but it has just been shown many times that the high tops with better traction on the soles have been a part of many wins. The more successful workouts also seem to use this type of shoes to avoid any slipping, falling, or twisting an ankle. It is just something to keep in mind when shopping for your kick boxing shoes.

Benefits of a Keeping a Workout Schedule

August 15th, 2010

One of the most important factors to losing weight is physical activity, particularly building muscle or mass. For most folks (myself included) this reads as a chore; cut the grass, take garbage out, strength training workout routine. Ugh.

Several years back, however, I dropped roughly 25 pounds and shaved some serious body fat. The process didn’t happen overnight (it took me a little more than 12 weeks, to be exact), but I see now just how important the strength training workout routine really was in terms of dropping the weight and in keeping it off. For me, the longer-term success of my weight loss involved several factors. The one that helped the most with my work out was keeping a training schedule. Or a diary, if you prefer that term.

Don’t misunderstand. My strength training routine never became enjoyable (it still isn’t) nor did I go to bed at night excitedly anticipating the dumbbells and benches I would face the following morning (I work out first thing in the morning and urge others to get into the same routine, but more on this later). By diarizing my strength training workout routine, I was able to trend my progress in black and white. This was especially true with my weight work out routines. I probably started day 1 with a chest work out on the incline bench with a max of 50 lbs dumbbells. Over time, I graduated to 55 lbs, 60 lbs, 65 lbs, and so on. Watching your strength level increase over a period of two to three months becomes intoxicating.

Even though I find this most helpful for my strength training workouts, the principle applies to a cardio workout routine. When I first started, I tracked my calories burned, my difficulty level, and total miles. Of course, my overall cardio workout routine remains the same, but those calorie numbers have increased, my difficulty levels have increased, and the total miles have edge upward too. (This applies even as my weight has dropped). And in both cases, I can go back to my diary entries today, and pinpoint where and when I have “fallen off the wagon” — those cardio workouts show less burned calories and fewer miles, and for the strength training workout routines, I show less repetitions and, in some cases, lighter weights.

Overall, keeping a schedule has helped to keep me involved with the work out, particularly with strength training. At first, it not only helped me to keep tabs on my progress, but after a bit of time, I actually started to look forward to adding to my trendlines. Even with a 6-day work out routine (three days spent on strength training, three on my cardio routine), missing one day impacts that trendline and, especially now, it drives me nuts to miss a day.

Another nice benefit to having a work out schedule is it helps to keep me on track. Working out in the morning has a couple of great benefits. One is getting those long, 45-minute strength training workouts out of the way. The other is that I am barely awake to complain about it. Being barely awake also means that my mental alertness isn’t always 100%, so the last thing I want is to have to “think” about my work out and how I will structure it. The schedule helps with just that. Knowing what I did the last time, or two times prior, or whatever, allows me to step it up a notch or at least maintain the same difficulty levels.

But most of all, the diary pages add up. This shows progress, especially with respect to my strength training workout routine, where the gradual results aren’t easily visible.

Punching Bag Benefits

June 21st, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

As long as you’re determined, whether or not you are a boxer, you can reap the benefits by working out with a punching bag. From a cost perspective, it is much cheaper to buy a punching bag than it is to attempt to setup a home gym. One could argue, a jump rope is even cheaper, but I doubt they would achieve the coordination and muscular growth a punching bag could provide. The bag is simply one of the best “overall” workouts, from a cardio and strength training perspective.

If you keep at it, you will succeed. Most people give up the 15-20 minutes of working the bag each day because it is hard work. Like anything else in life, stick with a workout and you will see results. Most who give up do so in the first few weeks. Tell yourself that you will last a month at whatever workout it is you choose before making any rash decisions.

So what are the benefits of the punching bag? Proper striking and footwork is one of the highest calorie burn intensive activities out there. Google “calorie burn activity chart” and you’ll notice that boxing is much more intensive than running and other common activities. Because of constant movement and strong punches, you would be amazed at how much anaerobic endurance increases. This is not to say that this is easy. You will still feel the soreness resulting from the lactic acid coursing through your arms and back, but with each workout, this will become less and less.

Speaking of soreness, it is best to rest for a day in between workouts to allow enough time for your body to repair itself. Working out with soar muscles can results in pulling something or even breaking a few fingers.

Returning to the benefits – All major muscle groups are exercised with proper technique; back, arms, glutes, abs, chest, etc. With 15-20 minutes a day, you will achieve increased endurance and mental focus. These benefits will stay with you in and out of the gym.

Before starting a workout, wrap your hands, wear proper gloves (pro boxing or MMA grappling/striking) and set a goal for yourself. If you just jump in and say I’ll last as long as I will last and/or feel like it, chances are, it won’t be a long time. And by “you”, I am referring to the commonplace person; it’s human nature to seek the most direct easiest way. Set a goal of 15 minutes every other day for a full month and push through the limits. Persistence is key.

April 29th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Sports boxing is considered by many to be one of the best physical workouts you can engage in. And, the good news is that you don’t have to seek out the boxing gym in a seedy neighborhood to gain the benefits.

The reason this sport is regarded as being such a fine activity is because it is really a whole-body fitness activity that tones muscles and strengthens your core, helping your overall fitness levels.

In some cases, people who want to enjoy some of the benefits of a boxing workout simply hang a punching bag in the garage or the basement. But for those who really want to experience the best of boxing, the boxing gym brought to your home can be the way to go.

When most people think of the boxing gym, they conjures up images of an old brick building that is probably dilapidated and in the part of town you would think twice about venturing into after dark.

And, the images of the interior don’t get much better: dark, smoke filled, smelly and filled with all kinds of characters who may bring back nostalgic memories and glimpses into a time gone by.

The boxing gym for decades was the place to go to find the aspiring athletes of the day and the hopeful boxers who dreamed of becoming the next champion in their weight class.

Dreams of maybe even becoming the next famous heavyweight boxer, the one being touted in the boxing news and about whom everyone is talking.

But things have changed and today, the boxing gym of modern times is an attractive place to workout and enjoy improving your fitness levels.

It often give boxers the opportunity to use some amazing state-of-the-art electronic fitness equipment and also have access to some of the simple and basic equipment as well.

Some of these basic items include the old standby of the punching bag, the leather medicine ball, the treadmill, the boxing gloves and the simple, but effective, jump rope.

All of these items are key elements for training of this sport and are useful in improving cardiovascular health, increasing strength and enhancing endurance.

And, another great thing about all of these simple items that are basic and essential ingredients to the boxing gym, is that they are all very easy to bring right into your home so that you can enjoy that great workout without having to leave your own premises. A great way to gain all of the benefits.

Having the boxing gym on the premises of your own home will help you to be sure that you attain the best possible fitness level through your exercises. You will also stay in the best form because of easy access and convenience.

While improving your overall fitness and strength through your activities in the boxing gym, you may also want to give some attention to working on improving your mental state and your level of determination in case you decide you want to go into a competitive mode with your new skills and fitness. Dukes up!

April 19th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Along with the right mouthpieces, hand wraps and padded headgear, groin pads and shin guards, proper boxing shoes are also very important as a part and parcel of the entire safety kit that one carries while boxing as they not only provide great protection to the legs while during training and sparring fights, but additionally provide a lot of swift footwork and comfort. This is very important because of the high demand for quick jumps and mobility which might take place during the actual fight. Whether men’s or women’s boxing shoes, Everlast shoes have carved a niche for themselves in this segment since many decades. They are the most sought after brand by both the genders for both professionals and beginners alike.

Everlast shoes come in great vibrant colors that look feminine yet provide with all the comfort, traction, breathability and the much needed safety. Whether it is men or women inside the boxing ring there is a lot of footwork involved and so one has to go in for a model that lasts long and does not show traces of wear and tear during the swift footwork that is a feature of the game. These shoes are ideal for hybrid conditioning, aerobics as well as cardio.

Everlast shoes come in two different styles which are lo-top and hi-top shoes as well as boots. One has ample choice to choose and pick from the collection basing on their requirements. And one advantage with the women’s boxing shoes is that they are specially sculpted in such a way that they fit the feet snuggly and provide the much needed cushioning and shock absorption. Breathability is ensured by the mesh panels that are incorporated in the boxing shoes so that they keep the feet absolutely cool during the toughest of sessions, inside or outside the ring.

Dave Toub is a strong believer in Everlast boxing shoes and would never train with anything else. Please check out one of my favorite Women’s boxing shoes and see the Punching Bags Pro homepage if you are interested in other gear as well.
