Brockton’s Julian Pollard a rare find
July 29th, 2010Any long-time boxing fan will tell you a large factor in the sports decline has been that the best athletes are not going into boxing, opting instead for the less painful, generally more lucrative, team sports. Brocktons Julian Pollard is the exception who proves how far a bonafide, all-around athlete can go when he applies his ability to honing some boxing skills. Pollard, a 6-foot-4, 262-pound standout defensive end for Syracuse Universitys football team from 2001-04, who had a couple cups of coffee in professional arena football, will be heading back to the Southern New England Golden Gloves Tournament in Fall River in the next couple weeks, defending the super heavyweight crown he won last year. What made last years SNEGG title so impressive was the fact that Pollard had only been in the gym a few weeks, when trainers Shawn McMullen and Eddie Bishop, of Bishops Gym in West Bridgewater, talked him into giving the tourney a try. Better yet, Pollard took his crown up to the Tournament of Champions in Lowell — aka the all-New England tourney, matching champs from the four regionals — a month later and won that belt, too.

July 9th, 2010An awesome six-man tournament will be taking place October 17th at the O2 World Arena, in Kreuzberg, Berlin, Germany. The fighters, who will be middleweights (160 lbs.) and super middleweights, (168 lbs.), come from all over the world to compete in this important tourney. Representing the United States will be Andre Ward, Andre Dirrell and Jermain Taylor. Arthur Abraham is of Armenian descent but resides in Berlin, Mikkel Kessler is Australian and Carl Froch will be representing the United Kingdom.
