The "Ghost" That Haunts Taylor

March 10th, 2010

After getting shocked during his last title fight, Jermain “Bad Intentions” Taylor (27-1-1, 17 KO’s) of Little Rock, Arkansas goes up against the same fighter that gave him his first taste of defeat. And that elusive retribution that Taylor is seeking for will come at a catch weight of 166 pounds.

“You can over hype this fight, if you want, call it a career defining fight, because that’s exactly what this fight is for me,” said Taylor, who hinted that he had trouble making the 160-pound limit during the first fight.

“If he wants to fight at 166, that’s fine by me. I can go home and eat pasta and not have to worry about the scales. I’ll be even stronger,” warned the Youngstown, Ohio native Kelly “the Ghost” Pavlik (32-0, 29 KO’s) right after knocking Taylor in the seventh round.

Taylor’s former trainer Emanuel Steward however hinted that the weight issue could pose a concern for his former fighter. “Pavlik had to kill himself to make 160. This allows him to be even stronger this time around,” Steward was quoted earlier.

Taylor remains a dangerous fighter and is even more determined to get right back in the ring with “The Ghost”, who also had a hard time making the weight, survived a knockdown, and went on to dethrone Mr. “Bad Intentions”. The only worry is that “The Beast” will be even bigger and stronger the second time around.

Author’s pick : Kelly Pavlik is way too big and strong for Taylor at 166 pounds. Coming into the first fight, both fighters had a hard time making the 160 weight limit. Both were physical drained coming into the fight, but somehow Pavlik was still able to summon enough strength to take Taylor’s best shots, and manage to knockout and dethrone the erstwhile undisputed champion. Now, simple logic would tell us that if both fighters were not at their A-game because of weight issues, how much more if they fight at the weight they are most comfortable at? The first fight : Pavlik was better than Taylor. The rematch : “The Ghost” will haunt Taylor even more. Author’s prediction : Early round knockout victory for “The Ghost”, around 5th or 6th round.

Manny Pacquiao – A Sporting Icon, A Symbol of Success From Poverty, and the Philippines’ Pride

March 1st, 2010

I do not really like boxing as a sport. The only time I ever had any interest in boxing in England was when Cassius Clay (later Mohammed Ali) was on television. When I came to the Philippines 6 years ago, in 2000, I soon became aware of the popularity of boxing. Even so, I still had no interest.

That changed in 2005. As the year came to an end, the build up to the January 2006 Pacquiao-Morales fight was becoming intense, and the extensive coverage of Pacquiao on television, both on news and his advertising appearances, had me anticipating the fight with as much relish as any native Filipino.

When the fight arrived, I was as excited as everyone else was; the national hero was to about perform, and I just could not wait. What I had not expected, though, was what a marvellous sporting event that was to be. Having been brought up on the cut and thrust of English football, and been to countless very exciting football matches with deafening crowd noise, I was surprised that a boxing match could generate equal excitement.

For the length of that first fight (the second in the Pacquiao-Morales series) I was on the edge of my seat for half the time. The rest of the time, I was on my feet, jumping up and down with each blow to Morales, shouting and baying along with our neighbours (who I could hear through the wall). When Morales went down for the last time in that fight, I was ecstatic.

I can honestly say that it was the best sporting event I have ever witnessed, despite being to many classic football matches, including England internationals. Pacquiao’s speed and strength, with his relentless pursuit of his opponent, was exhausting just to watch. Most boxing matches, from the odd glimpses I have seen over the years, are like men playing pat-a-cake compared to the continuous action in the Pacquiao-Morales fight. Each round was a major event in itself, and just as tiring. When that fight finished, I felt drained as well as exhilarated.

Although wondering whether I could survive another fight like that, such was its intensity, I was hoping for a rematch, and yesterday it came. The build up had seemed even longer this time, and my 2 year old daughter was already a Pacquiao expert. Mention his name, and she’d come towards me throwing punches; I doubt, though, that she really understood what Manny was about, until the fight time came yesterday.

We had to survive 5 hours of programming before the fight actually started; we had no idea what time the Pacquiao fight began, so the television was on all that time. Finally, the last warm up fight was over, and the tension rose rapidly, not just at the venue, but in our home and millions of other Filipino homes around the world.

I was already on feet hyped up when we heard that Sarah Geronimo was to sing the national anthem. What a perfect start: the world’s best female singer singing the national anthem. Philippine pride was rising with each moment of the anthem; and what an inspiration she is. You guessed it, she is my favourite singer. I was already on Cloud 9 going in to the fight, rooting for Manny at the top of my voice even before he stepped into the ring. And I’m not even a Filipino, just a proud resident; my wife is Filipina, though, and our daughter was born here too.

We were all with our hero as the fight started, and breathless with the first round exchanges, just as with the previous fight. With Manny looking to be stronger even than before, things were looking good, and we were all jumping up and down as Morales went down for the first time. I am not sure our daughter really knew exactly why, but she was as noisy as my wife and I, and jumped just as high.

It was total bliss for the Philippines when Morales was knocked down for the last time. We were on a high for the rest of the day, and remain so. As I wrote the last paragraph, I had to leave the computer to see Manny on a telephone call to the television programme Wow Wow Wee. The call was typical Manny, typical Filipino.

Manny was asked to sing a catchy little song that the audience dance to every day on the programme. Over the phone, he did so; no fuss, no hesitation.

Manny Pacquiao is typical of the best Filipino characters. Coming from a very poor family, he is now rich and famous. However, unlike many poor boy made good sportsmen, Manny is still supremely modest and humble, and a very likeable man.

I for one am very proud of Manny’s achievements; even more, I am proud of the way he has handled fame and fortune. The Philippines is collectively proud of everything Pacquiao.

Well done, Manny, we all love you here in the Philippines. But then, I am sure you know that already, but are too humble to ever mention it.

As for Erik Morales, he too brought pride to Mexico over many years, and retained his modesty. I was not surprised to hear that he and Manny were dining together and are friends. I was thinking even before the fight, Erik would be given a big welcome here in the Philippines too. His achievements, and boxing prowess, are sure to be respected. Not only that, though, Mexico has close ties with the Philippines, which was under Spanish rule too, administered from Mexico, for over 300 years.

The Pacquiao-Morales trilogy may be over, but the memories and the pride will last forever. Pacquiao achieved massive success, from the worst beginnings, by dedication, endless hard work, vision and perseverance. Those are often the cornerstones of any success, but what sets Manny apart is that he has achieved such success while retaining his humility and respect for his fellow men, including Erik Morales.

This success and achievement article was written by Roy Thomsitt, owner and part author of the Routes To Self Improvement web site.

Boxing Match Can Determine Champs

February 23rd, 2010

Boxing is a sport that has been around for centuries. A boxing match consists of two participants, usually men, who face each other in a battle of fists and speed until either one of them is knocked out or until the set number of fighting rounds has been completed.

But there is much more to a boxing match and this sport’s history for that matter. It is more than just a series of punches and jabs to land a blow or to ducking and weaving to try to evade the blows.

While the sport actually does date back to the beginnings of civilization and competition, some of the most intriguing aspects of this sport have come about in the last few decades.

In the modern day matches of today, sometimes a boxing match can seem like it is more about the outrageous characters that come into the ring than it is about the skill and sport of boxing.

However, a flamboyant or controversial professional boxer is not all that makes the sport interesting. In fact, there are also constant rumors of corruption within the industry, gambling issues and charges of matches being rigged as well as the claims of ties to organized crime.

But, regardless of the intrigue behind the scenes, for most people this sport match grips them and brings them alive in the moment as their favorite or hated competitor faces-off.

Of course, the fans know full well that in the next few moments, one of the boxers in the ring could be awarded with the glory of victory or the shame of defeat. Sometimes tragedy will befall a competitor, which is always a possibility that lurks in the dark corners of the matches.

All of these elements combine to make a boxing match one of the most exciting sporting events to be attended, at least for those who are big fans of the sport.

Of course, there are many critics of this sport who are not in the least excited by the prospects of a fighter, even one willing to do battle and being permanently hurt just for the sake of a sport.

But, it should be remembered that a professional boxing match should never be compared to a street fight or a barroom brawl. There are strict rules that the boxers must adhere to in order to reduce the incidence of serious injury to the participants and also to keep the action going so that it holds the interest of the fans.

The rules of this sport do vary to some degree between the different boxing organizations. There are specific amateur rules, which are also Olympic rules, and there are professional rules.

However, there are even some differences in rules between the different professional organizations of this sport. So before a major bout takes place, a meeting is generally held to clarify which set of rules will govern the match.

There are some things that are never allowed during a professional boxing match, such as: head butting, hitting below the belt, striking an opponent who is “down” on the canvas, using elbows and forearms, kicking, biting of ears (official rule determined thanks to Mike Tyson) or grabbing the ropes.

Martial Arts Training Equipment

February 22nd, 2010

Their are numerous forms of martial arts that are trained to learn techniques for combat. One must decide which art is right for them as well as their purpose for the training. Training in the arts combines learning self-defense techniques, fitness training, or training for combat sports. No matter which style of martial arts you train in there is equipment that will assist you in becoming the best martial artist you can be. Here we list of a few of those items and explain why they are important in the martial art of your choice, whether it be Tae kwon do, Judo, Karate, or numerous others.

Building your leg muscles along with Stretching is very important in your martial arts training, and one way to quickly help with getting high kicks is a split leg machine. These split machines have seats that are padded, with spreader arms that you legs sit on. When the lever is cranked the spreader arms move apart. This is to be done until the tension is low to moderate tension in the inner thigh muscles. Hold this position for a count of 30. After this try to turn the lever a little more extending the spreader arms further apart. This is the position you will hold for a full minute. This is the main stretch that will get you those high kicks. The split leg machine should be done daily to increase flexibility.

Another core piece to your martial arts training is the punching bags also going by the name heavy bag. Either the bags can be hung from a wall/ceiling or the base can be filled with sand/water to give it weight so it won’t fall over after being kicked or punched. Bags that hang should have strong, heavy chains and a weighted, stable stand.

Kicking bags are another important martial arts equipment that should be used in training. Most of these are made with high impact foam that covers reinforced vinyl. These kicking bags are made to so they cover the arms and abdomen of the person holding the bag. There are handle that the holder can grasp on the back side of the kicking bags, thus giving the holder a strong hold to take on the most powerful of kicks.

The last critical piece of martial arts equipment is the martial arts shoes. These shoes should have non-slip soles which increases balance. If you notice the traction of the shoe has a circular look towards the ball of the foot to allow for the foot to spin on the mats. This is very important to lessen the likely hood of a knee injury from the torque place on the knee when doing round or side kicks. Martial arts shoes provide better hygiene, since the bare skin of the foot doesn’t come into contact with the mats/floor.

February 15th, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

This March 8, two great names in the lightweight division will battle it out in Mexico. Lightweight champion Juan Diaz (33-0, 17 KOs) of Houston puts his belt on the line against Nate Campbell (31-5-1, 25 KOs) of Tampa, Florida, in the 12-round opening bout. Diaz looked terrific in defeating Julio Diaz and Acelino Freitas, and hopes to keep the momentum going against this crafty challenger.

Juan Diaz became the second-youngest fighter in the history of the sport to win a world title in 2004. He won the WBA lightweight championship title at just the age of 20. Diaz has become one of the most exciting boxers in the sport. He is a punishing and a relentless boxer that burrows forward throwing punches in bunches at all times. He is also a senior at the University of Houston-Downtown who would like to go on to law school someday.

For Nate Campbell, he did not have his first professional fight until he was almost 28 years old. Campbell learned the tricks of the trade inside the ring and he is a gifted athlete, which resulted in him being named IBF mandatory challenger to Diaz.

Campbell, with his unusually long arms, will be interesting to see if his reach advantage can help him find a way to do what nobody has been able to do before him, and that is, to slow down and defeat the always charging Baby Bull.

Campbell has unusually long arms, and it will be interesting to see if his reach advantage can help him find a way to do what nobody has been able to do before him: slow down and defeat the ever-charging Baby Bull.

Jack Dempsey Vs Jess Willard – The Birth of a Legend

January 31st, 2010

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In July 1919 Jack Dempsey took the title from Jess Willard. It was a display of speed, Power and ferocity that has never been surpassed and made Dempsey a ring legend. The fight was held in a purpose built timber stadium and took place in a hundred and twelve degree heat. The odds showed Willard as a slight favorite in this fight. Doc Kearn’s, Dempsey’s manager had wagered ten thousand dollars at odds of ten to one on a first round knockout.

Jess Willard was a massive man of six feet six and around two hundred and fifty pounds. He is not considered as a great boxer but he was tremendously strong and had great stamina. He had taken the title from the great Jack Johnson by wearing him down and knocking him out in the twenty sixth round of a forty round fight. He also had a good long left jab and deadly knockout power in his right hand. Jess had never been knocked down and his chin was very solid which he would prove beyond any doubt against Jack Dempsey.

Jack Dempsey was nicknamed the Manassa Mauler and was often compared to a raging tiger. Dempsey weighed in at about one hundred and eighty pounds and would be classed as a cruiserweight today. But Jack could hit unbelievably hard for a man of his size and was able to knock out most of the leading heavyweights of his era. He had truly brilliant footwork, fast hands and was one of the few boxers who can fight hard when hurt.

The fight started slowly as both men looked for an opening. Dempsey is best known for his viscous attacks but he was also a clever and skilled boxer. Jacks footwork is a sight to behold in this opening minute and one wonders what he would look like with better video footage. Suddenly jack launches a terrific combination of tight hooks. The left hook shatters jess Willard’s jaw and knocks him to the canvas. This was the beginning of the end for Willard. He rose but was quickly beaten back to the canvas again, and then again. This is were the fight would be stopped today but unfortunately for Willard the rules were not as strict back then as he was knocked down no less then seven times in the first round. There was no neutral corner rule and so Dempsey was aloud to hit as soon as Willard’s knees were of the canvas. Willard sustained a shattered jaw, missing teeth, a fractured eye socket and a broken nose during the fight. Jess was on the canvass and totally disorientated when the bell rang to end the round.

Jack celebrated triumphantly as the round ended. He even left the ring before he realized that Willard had been saved by the bell and unbelievably had no intention of retiring. A shocked Dempsey had to race back to the ring to carry on the fight.

Jess was beaten around the ring for a further two rounds. He was in a horrible state and the left side of his face was a mess of blood. Even Dempsey’s back was covered in Willard’s blood as it dripped of Willard’s face in the clinches. Even the crowd were yelling for the fight to be stopped but the referee was from the old school and would not here of it. Willard’s handlers begged him to stop fighting between rounds but Willard was determined to fight on. Again one must wonder what this fight would have looked like in high quality colour film as its already hard to watch poor Willard take such a beating on the black and white low quality film.

Jess showed tremendous courage in his effort to fight on but was unable to come out for round four. He was on the brink of death towards the end of the fight. Dempsey showed great stamina and fought relentlessly through the terrific heat.

Jack Dempsey became a legend that day and became the benchmark by which other champions were compared. His modern style revolutionized boxing and the fight game would never be the same again.

Beginner’s Guide to Sparring

January 7th, 2010

GUIDE TO SPARRING

Sparring is an essential part of any boxer’s training programme whether Amateur or Professional.

Punch bags and focus pads are O.K to develop timing, power, technique and fitness but they don’t hit back!

A sparring partner is required to learn the true actions and reactions of an opponent. Your boxing coach will tell you when you are ready for sparring, this will be when your boxing education really begins.

There are two levels of sparring, body sparring and open sparring. Both levels should be supervised at all times by a competent coach.

BODY SPARRING

The next step up from the punch bags is body sparring, this is where boxers can punch from the neck down to the waist. Although no head contact is allowed, it is recommended that both boxers wear protective equipment in the event of stray punches – A good quality Headguard (Leather), gumshield, no foul protector / groin guard and 16oz sparring gloves.

This method of sparring is a great way for conditioning the body and mind to diminish the fear of being hit and also hitting somebody.

You will stay at this level until your coach thinks you are ready to step up to open sparring.

OPEN SPARRING

Open sparring is where punches to the body and head is allowed.

As with body sparring, all the protective equipment must be worn. Your first sparring session must be highly controlled, remember you are still learning and you should not be trying to beat up your sparring partner.

It takes some time to accept getting hit, at first you might get mad but it’s better to keep your composure and try and figure out why you got hit in the first place.

You should go into every session with the intention to practice everything your coach has told you. For example, you might be working on sharpening your left jab and keeping your right hand close to your jaw, or you might be slipping punches and bobbing and weaving.

Listen to your coach and train hard!

Easy Boxing Lessons For Training

December 22nd, 2009

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When beginning boxing lessons, the coach should place all his boxers in a circle around himself while teaching the phases of the important on-guard position. We find that such mass instruction at the outset is much more beneficial than having the boys pair off immediately with gloves on. The time allotted to each athlete for this exercise should be determined by the amount of previous training he has had.

After this practice procedure in which they punch at the air with bare hands, have the boys put on gloves, pair off, and go through the routine with one boy punching, the other blocking.

Practicing the Left Jab
For this aspect of boxing lessons, both boys should be in the regular on-guard position. Stress here again that all punches start from and finish in the all-important on-guard position. Changing positions with the start of a new punch spoils deception. When punches begin from on-guard position the opponent does not know whether a left, a right, a jab, or a hook is coming.

Both boys in a pair should simultaneously throw left jabs to the jaw. This is excellent practice since both boys learn the block as well as the punch. The heads should roll a bit to the right, and the right hands should catch the left jabs just a few inches from the chins, but the right gloves still do not come into contact with the faces. Frequently a boxer makes the mistake of holding his right glove against his face. This is wrong as he receives part of the impact in blocking a blow.

Also guard against the mistake of instinctively reaching out with the right glove to block a jab. If this error is made, the opponent may feint with a left jab, and then follow with a left hook. This can be a disastrous error. Have your boys draw back into the on-guard position, practicing the blow and block. Stress again and again that, after the jab, the arm comes straight back, thereby offsetting a possible right-hand counter.

The puncher immediately follows the left jab with the right cross. The left is snapped back for protection and is ready to go again. Proper timing is all-important. The right cross must instantly follow the left jab.

Practicing the Right Cross
From the on-guard position the blocker for convenience lowers his left arm to give the puncher practice in landing the right cross.

The puncher follows straight through. His left hand is back protecting, and also in position to punch. Always, one hand out, one hand back. The puncher draws back into the on-guard position. Go through the entire motion, again and again.

Counter for the Right Cross
For convenience in practice during boxing lessons, the blocker should drop his left arm. In an actual bout he would keep his left high and counter a right hand by a left jab to the shoulder of the original puncher or by a jab to the jaw. Emphasize that a good jabber can beat a right-hand puncher nine times out of ten. The left hand travels only a short distance to the point of contact, whereas the right cross must travel at least twice the distance to the point of contact. Hence, as shown in the illustration, a good jab will offset a good right cross.

If these practice routines are followed, the young boxer will definitely improve.

Collecting Free Boxing Autographs By Mail FAQ

December 19th, 2009

Q: When I write to a boxing star, how can I increase my chances of getting a response?

A: Keep your letters brief & to the point. Always be courteous – saying please in your request and ‘thank you’ at the closing. Always include a self-addressed stamped envelope and print your letter neatly & clearly.

Q: What types of boxing memorabilia can I send to be autographed?

A: You can send almost anything to be autographed! Flat items are the most economical, but you can send larger items, as well. Here are a few ideas: Ticket stubs, photos, index cards, etc. If you decide to send larger items, such as boxing gloves or trunks, these would cost more to ship and you will want to make sure that you cover the return postage, as well.

Q: Is it necessary to include a self-addressed stamped envelope when requesting boxing autographs?

A: Absolutely. This is the single most important thing that you can do to increase your chances of getting a response. More often than not – no SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) means no response.

Q: How long will it be before I get a response or boxing autograph?

A: Response times vary depending on the athlete themselves, their schedules and time of year. If it’s boxing season, for example, it may take a little longer to get that autograph from your favorite boxing star. However, if you write to an athlete during the off season, it may increase your chances of getting a quicker reply.

Q: How will I know if the boxing autograph that I receive is genuine?

A: You can always have an autograph authenticated, but that can get costly if you were to have your entire collection checked out. If you are a through-the-mail autograph collector, there are a few possible responses that you may receive. These include: authentic, secretarial, pre-print or autopen signatures. The first, and most obvious, is authentic and that’s what we all hope to get. A secretarial signature is self-explanatory in that it is usually signed by the celebrity’s secretary or assistant. The best way to explain a pre-print signature is that an athlete may sign one photo and then have copies of the real autograph made and send that copied photo out to fans. An autopen signature can be difficult to detect, but can be noted as an autograph that has a lot of ’squiggles’ throughout. It also has very hard points where the pen would normally lift – it leaves a dark circle of ink where the machine presses so hard on the item being signed.

Q: Where can I find photos of my favorite boxing star?

A: There are many venues to purchase photos – many are listed online. In addition, you can write to promoters/agents and ask for a photo, which can be used to obtain individual autographs on that photo. Many times, the athletes are happy to provide their own photo if you ask them to do so.

Q: Where can I find the home, or email, address of my favorite boxing star?

A: For reasons of both respect and privacy, it’s always best to write to an athlete via regular mail in care of his/her promoter, venue or agent. Requesting autographs via e-mail is becoming more popular, but it requires that the athlete pay for postage and, therefore, is not always an effective way of getting autographs.

Q: I want to write a letter, but I don’t know what to say! Can you help?

A: Sure – politely ask the athlete for his/her autograph. Be sure to let them know how much you enjoy boxing as a sport and, in particular, their dedication as an athlete. Point out the fact that you have enclosed a SASE and kindly ask for their autograph. Finally, always be courteous and thank them for their time.

Q: I have a rare, one-of-a-kind, boxing collectible that I would like to have signed. Is it OK to send it?

A: Because there are no guarantees that any autograph request will be successful, and the possibility of items getting lost, it is recommended that you never send anything that you couldn’t be without. If it’s a rare item, hold on to it until an in-person autograph opportunity arises.

Q: I work for a charitable organization. Can I request donations in the form of boxing autographs for my cause?

A: If you want to request an autograph to be used for any type of charity, send your request on official company letterhead. Be upfront & completely honest with the athlete – if you plan to sell the autograph to benefit your cause, tell them. Many celebrities are happy to help with a variety of causes – especially if all you are asking for is an autograph.
